Leah's 1969 Chevy Camaro SS

MILLER COLLINS RACING

Name: Leah Miller Collins

Spouse: Dan Collins.  In 1994, Dan and I were introduced by his brother Travis in the tower at Firebird while I was announcing Friday Night Drags.  We would see each other occasionally at the track. Dan even helped install my motor in 1997 but we didn't start dating until 1999. One night in January of 1999, Dan called me to 'borrow' a pair of street slicks for his 1984 Monte Carlo.  He didn't really need the slicks...We've been together ever since and we were married December 18, 1999.

Occupation: Faculty Associate and Advisor at Arizona State University. Advisor for KASC 1260am The Blaze. 1988-2000:  Radio personality in Phoenix at KZON, KSLX, KUPD and KUKQ.  Winner of Best Radio Personality - Phoenix New Times 1999. Former Track Announcer- Firebird International Raceway 1992-2001.

NHRA Number: D754

Car: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS purchased April 1996 from Coletti's car lot on Country Club in Mesa.  I spotted it's rear end while driving by with my parents Easter weekend.

The new motor: .30 over 454, 10.5 compression, Edelbrock performer RPM oval port heads, 950 Holly Carburetor, .600 lift solid cam.  In addition,  we've had a Turbo 400 with transbrake built by Darryl Boso.  A Mark Williams rear end was assembled also.  Rear end destroyed 11/10/02.

Engine history: The car has 350 emblems on it, I keep them on to tease my competition.  I bought it with a 396, blew that up in 1997 and then bought another 396 engine from Jerry Denton. That motor ran consistent for 4 years, I ran my first 12 second pass with it, and enjoyed winning several races with it.  In 2001, I made a remark to Dan that I wanted to go faster, read the new motor for the details.

Home Track:  Firebird International Raceway-Team Firebird-Sportsman class.

Fastest times:  January 20, 2002 - 11.35 116.15

Daily Driver:  2002 black Monte Carlo SS

Tech Stuff:  12 bolt rear end, Mark Williams axles and spool, 430 gears, 29 x 9 Mickey Thompson slicks, Cal Tracs traction bars.

Memorable Moments: Super Chevy Winner -DOT Class-1998 at SIR in Tucson.  Runner-up at my second ever bracket race.  Finished 11th first year in Sportsman-1999. Beating up on Lonnie Garcia G799.  Winning the last race my dad was at.

Ever since I was four years old, I remember watching Speed Racer cartoons.  Speed is a honest racer who loves to win but always tries to do the right thing.  Something to strive for!
