The chewed up ring and pinion. Fortunately the cover stayed on when it went boom.  The Firebird tow vehicle had to pull me with a jack under the rear as the car would not roll forward. See next photo....

The only way the car would roll was to drive it in reverse, including reverse onto the trailer.
